Manipulative Advertising Works for Me

April 26th, 2007

Personally, I love a good marketing technique. Even having recognized that an advertiser is manipulating me, I’ll buy. Perhaps this is because if I recognize the trick then I’m not really tricked, right? I’m the exception to the rule. Aren’t we all? Leif M. Wright says that is the reason we are all susceptible to manipulation from advertisers. He writes, “Telling you the features of a product is nowhere near as effective as establishing a trust relationship between you and the advertiser and then repeating a logo or a phrase so much that it becomes ingrained in your mind.”

On his U.K. television show, mentalist Darren Brown shows the power of manipulation by convincing a group of atheists to believe in God (when he, himself, is not a believer.) He’s also able to fool a group of advertising executives into presenting him with a campaign that he has already predicted they’d create. He simply baits the images that they’re shown preceding the meeting, and they can’t help but produce the result Brown expected.

Everyday, simple visual cues are being recorded in our brains subconsciously. A picture is worth more than a thousand words. Sometimes they are worth a thousand words and a feeling. And a feeling can be worth a few thousand words on its own. It can translate directly into a trust relationship; a perfect union of product and consumer. What could be more romantic?

We are all subject to advertiser’s influence. I’ve accepted it. It’s actually good news that no one seems to be exempt. Not me, not you, and especially not your customers. This information doesn’t change the way I operate. Because when Crest comes out with a new toothpaste formulation, I’ll know it’s not really new. But you can bet it’s going to be in my bathroom.

Forehead Tattoo…Anyone?

March 22nd, 2007

There are thousands of uses for your logo. Most people put their logo design on business cards, signage, t-shirts, etc. Now, people are putting logos on their bodies. This article may or may not surprise you.
This is when you know your logo and brand is legitimate. How great is it for companies to have free advertising on the human body. Most companies are able to have their logo on clothing; unfortunately, clothing has to come off some time. The tattooed logos will always be there reminding people of their undying loyalty to their favorite brands.

What if your brand isn’t quite that popular? What if nobody wants to give you the free advertising? No worries, you can always buy ad space on a body. In the past few years, Goldenpalace.com has purchased spots on foreheads, chests, and other unmentionable body parts.

Take a look at the story here.

Here’s the interesting question, does your logo look good enough to tattoo on someone’s body?

CHINESE CAR MAKER PLAYS AMERICAN IDOL WITH LOGO

January 15th, 2007

American Idol, is now officially a worldwide phenomenon. Even in communist China, the Western Culture is infiltrating all aspects of their culture and business. Chinese carmaker GEELY, has even gone so far as to use the popular American Idol judging format to select their new logo. A group of adjudicators, after a 4 phase selection process, will narrow down 100 finalists to the single winning entry. The ‘lucky’ winner, according to this article, will earn $58,000.

I have a few problems with this. First: Unless you have Simon, you WILL fail…even if you get some other English guy, or gal that loves hurling insults, there is only one Simon. Second: It annoys me that so many large companies are switching to ‘contest’ formats for graphic design work. This article perfectly articulates this problem, although on GEELY’S behalf, $58,000 for a logo is a respectable sum. Third: A logo should not be GEELY’S primary concern, getting a new name should be. Mercedes…Lexus…Bugatti…Geely??? One of these names is not like the other ones. The others conjure up thoughts of luxury and quality, Geely evokes thoughts of a children’s board game.
I have proposed a logo for them below.
Geely
