WORLD CUP FEVER (LOGO DESIGN)

As the world burns with World Cup Fever, here in America it is barely even a blip on the radar. But in Logo Design News, the Official World Cup 2006 Logo:
OFFICIAL 2006 WORLD CUP LOGO
has come under fire lately from Erik Spiekermann. Why should you care what Mr. Spiekermann has to say? To quote the article at DW-World“Erik Spiekermann is one of Germany’s best-known typographers and designers. He was one of the founders of MetaDesign, one of Germany’s leading studios for corporate design and branding, whose clients have included Apple Computer, Audi, VW, IBM and Nike. He has designed the passenger information systems for the German railway system and helped redesign The Economist magazine. He is an honorary professor at the College of Art in Bremen and is a former president of the International Institute for Information Design. He had no role in the design for the 2006 World Cup.” He comments that the logo was killed by commitee and simply has too many elements to effectively communicate any message. He even goes on to say that the logo is an embarassment and he is ashamed to call himself a German designer. His advice to the Design firm responsible? Don’t quit your day job.
