I used to be a full-on webpage designer. I would crank out 15 to 20 site designs a month. I always wanted to make my sites easy-to-use and cool looking. Each time I wanted to out do myself in creation and innovation. Incorporating some cool Flash animation was always fun and satisfying for me.

Now that I have been involved in SEO, or site optimization, for a few years I now think about Flash a little bit different. What good is a totally cool homepage made with just Flash if no one ever gets to see it? What I would recommend is designing your page in html with plenty of room for good keyword-rich copy and then placing swf movies in certain areas of your homepage. This way you can still have cool animation stuff and still accommodate all of the site optimization concerns.
